Biological filters are installed to make up for the unnatural conditions that occur in backyard ponds (i.e. low circulation and aeration, high pollution and low oxygen). Fish waste, uneaten fish food, rotting organic material, and too much algae contribute to pond pollution and sludge. This waste needs to be removed from the pond to reduce stress to fish.

Filters are designed to allow large colonies of purifying bacteria to operate effectively in small volumes of water. The secret to successful filtration is agitation and oxygen. In a well agitated/aerated pond you will see major improvements in pond filter efficiency.
 
Whether you select a pressure filter or a gravity assisted model, a submersible pump must be connected to the filter, and it must run 24 hours per day. Failure to do this will result in the bacteria dying due to lack of oxygen.
 
The addition of an air pump to a pond will increase oxygen, decrease algae, and increase filter efficiency.
 
The BEST filter system consists of three components:
 
Filter - mechanically/biologically removes dirt and dissolved waste.
Ultra Violet Clarifier (UVC) - clears green water.
